The American Cancer Society recommends that women 40 years and older begin routine screenings for breast cancer and continue those screenings for as long as they are physically able and willing to receive treatment should doctors discover abnormalities—regardless of age.

On March 2nd, Belmont Village Senior Living’s Founder and CEO, Patricia Will, moderated a webinar like her book titled “An Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers.” presented by author Connie Baher. Much-loved Houstonian, Evelyn Gunnels, celebrated 100 years on August 4th at Belmont Village Hunter’s Creek, where she was recognized as the very first resident to join the community when it opened in 2014. Evelyn is among a growing number of American centenarians, that live to 100 and beyond. In 2021, there were 97,914 centenarians in the U.S., and this figure is expected to increase to 589,000 by the year 2060.

The opening marks the 15th community in the state of California and is the 33rd community in the Belmont Village Senior Living portfolio, providing unparalleled hospitality, the highest standards of quality care and first-class health and wellness-centered programs.

As older adults continue to age, it can be difficult for both them and their loved ones to distinguish between the signs and symptoms associated with ‘normal’ aging, such as stress and cognitive decline, and a common precursor to dementia called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) – especially when it’s in its very early stages. There are over 100 different causes of dementia, but many are correctable such as delirium, drug side effects and metabolic disorders. There are four main causes of incurable dementia: Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy body, vascular dementia, and frontotemporal dementia, including Pick’s disease. The boundaries behind these types are often blurred because a person may have more than one type at a time. Alzheimer’s is by far the most prevalent, accounting for 60 to 80% of all cases, but when it occurs in conjunction with vascular dementia, the percentage climbs to over 90%. It’s normal to want to be optimistic and dismiss early signs and symptoms, but if memory lapses are consistent enough to cause concern, it’s best to be proactive and get help. In many cases, there may be an underlying cause that’s correctable.

In recognition of Stress Awareness Month (April 2022), Belmont Village Senior Living recently hosted a webinar by Dr. Justin Allen, M.D., which focused on the stress of being a caregiver. Amongst the detrimental facets of stress discussed, the webinar addressed burnout, which is a major challenge as caregivers learn how to cope with and manage stress.
